In the here and now, Astro Bot has earned a place in my heart among the very best of PlayStation’s franchises. Continue along and kill the two Stampers, then tug the Wires on the wall to extend some platforms. These are temporary, so quickly jump along them and bounce on the Blue Trampoline at the end to get to the upper area. Here, avoid jumping to avoid being affected by the strong wind as you walk right to the next Checkpoint (you may get hit with some debris here too!). Once both Stampers are dealt with, smash the Canisters and collect the four Coins, then jump up the ledge on the right to get to the next Checkpoint.
I figured it might be a cute series of minigames, akin to the robot-themed minigames in the PlayStation 4’s pack-in title, The Playroom. That PS4 game was the sort of thing you boot up once, mess around with for 30 minutes, and then forget it exists. Speed Run mode lets you race against the clock to complete areas as quickly as possible, adding a timer to see how proficient you really are. Unfortunately, there are no additional co-op missions or multiplayer modes. Replayability comes in the form of wanting to show off what the DualSense is capable of, something that you likely won’t want to stop doing once you’ve tried it.
But once activated, the triggers might stop halfway into a pull, requiring extra effort to “push past” the resistance to get a full trigger pull. Every new console needs a great technical showpiece, and Sony hit it out of the park by including the infectiously adorable Astro’s Playroom with the PS5. This references Kat of Gravity Rush, released on PSVita in 2012 and developed by SIE Japan Studio. As should be evident, Kat has the ability to change the direction of gravity. In 2015, it was remastered on the PlayStation 4 by Bluepoint Games. At the end of the short side-path to the Multi-Tap, you’ll spot a Bot with a flashlight stalked by a Bot in a straw hat. This references 2003’s Siren on PS3, developed by SCE Japan Studio. In 2016, Siren was ported to the PlayStation 4 with added Trophy support.

And it’s an excellent demonstration of just what makes the PS5 so special. Looking around here, you’ll notice the massive white PS5 faceplates flanking the curving black center piece that makes up the PS5’s visual design–only you’re on the inside of it. It’s obvious because the game wants players to understand the potential, and that’s certainly there. What makes Astro’s Playroom feel novel or even unique is its integration with the DualSense controller and its haptic feedback feature. Every few steps will uncover a new thing to interact with that will influence the DualSense controller in some way.
Each level is split into four key areas, two of which are bendera 88 reliant on a feature of the DualSense, all are mandatory to complete the levels. As soon as I encountered the first of these, I knew I would have serious issues with this game when it comes to my disability. I opted to enter Memory Meadow first, a charming area with fields aplenty. The mandatory interaction area in this level required the use of the touchpad, namely to flick repeatedly in the direction you wish to travel to move the ball.
The Bots chasing the bike refer to the huge swarms of zombies featured in the game. Further along the area where the Horizon and Dreams easter eggs are will be some vines you can move by blowing into your microphone. Inside the cave on the right is a coffin, which if you punch will cause a blonde figure to emerge and pull the lid back on. This references the Castlevania series, specifically 1997’s Symphony of the Night on PS1, by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo.
You’ll need to have collected the PlayStation Artefact from Bumper Broadway in Memory Meadow to get this Trophy. Just double jump over the open button to flip the lid and earn this Trophy. Once you’ve got at least ten Astro Bots following you, hold down the Square button to spin attack into them and be sure to knock at least 10 over to get the Trophy. As with all PlayStation games, you just need to collect all the other Trophies for the Platinum. It’s catchy and fun, although I may need therapy to remove the GPU Jungle song from endlessly repeating in my head. The DualSense’s haptic feedback distributes the vibrations in extremely precise ways to mimic the sensations being experienced in the gameplay. This can be as simple as the controller rippling as you walk through blades of grass or softly buzzing as each raindrop falls on your umbrella. It’s yet to be seen how much developers will lean into this new technology, but Astro’s Playroom brings the controller to life and stimulated my sense of touch like no game has before. Astro’s Playroom is more of a game than it has any right to be given its instant accessibility to all PS5 owners, but that doesn’t mean it’s a very long one. It took me around four hours to complete all the worlds, attempt every speedrunning level a couple of times, and acquire around 90% of the collectibles.
At the very start of Raytrace Ruins, there are some Bots on the right playing Ninja Bots. This was a free add-on to 2013 PS4 pack-in title The Playroom by SCE Japan Studio, which is the originator of the Bots and actually precedes the creation of Astro. ” Trophy, awarded for getting hit by flying rubbish in Memory Meadow. Astro’s Playroom launches November 12th, bundled with the PlayStation 5.
Doing so will cause an artefact to emerge from the asteroid – a PS2 game disc. From the tightrope where the wind blows at you from the left-hand side, you’ll need to reach the platform over on the right. Jump from the middle of the rope, using the wind as momentum, and then use your blasters to reach the platform. Hold down square to unleash a spin attack on the blue flower that’s there, which will cause a brand new column to emerge from the clouds. Over on the right-hand side of the area there are some floating crates in the water.
When this partnership fell through, Kutaragi persevered and developed it into a standalone console, resulting in the original PlayStation. 1994 Throwback’s primary reference is Demo 1, a pack-in demo disc packed in with the PlayStation that was updated over the course of the PlayStation’s life. It was cair 78 first available in 1994 at trade shows and eventually packed in with the system itself. It would then be updated six times over the years with new games and revised menus; the logo is from the 1996 version. In the final shaded section of the level with the long wooden bridge, look down on the left-hand wall to see a Bot on a bike escaping a swarm of Bots.
Note that if the cat stays out of the curtains for too long, then a dog will appear to interfere the cat which gives an advantage to the mice. It masterfully blends nostalgia with the new, taking you through a tour of PlayStation history, milking your memory glands with iconic Easter eggs and console startup noises that somehow make you feel things. It’s like how music transports you to a place – the sounds and images of consoles past take you right back to that childhood bedroom, to a time when life was more simple. Asobi Team has done a tremendous job in adding some variety to Astro’s Playroom’s game worlds. The player will move from the lush greens of GPU Jungle to the chilly climate of Cooling Springs and the luminous technology of SSD Speedway.
